Wichita Whole Woman Center

Procedure Description:
an alternative to cone biopsy for cervical dysplasia. Both diagnostic and potentially curative.

What To Expect:
If performed in the office: a paracervical pain block, using a needle and xylocaine will be placed. Most women feel this as a "pinch and a cramp"; some have mild nausea or a brief "tinny" taste in the mouth. If performed in surgery center: a preoperative sedative and IV sedation, plus av paracervical block are used. Either way, the procedure takes 15 to 30 minutes and you can expect to go home within 1 hour.

Preprocedure:
You may premedicate with 2 extra strength Tylenol or 600 mg of ibuprofen 30 minutes before your appointment. No other special preparation is required. You may want to have a friend or relative available to drive you home-- in case you have more cramping than usual, or just don't feel up to it.

Postprocedure:
You will have some discharge, ranging from a bit of bleeding to pink and watery, for 3 to 4 weeks after LEEP, as the cervix heals. Cramping usually subsides quickly, and you may return to work or school the following day. No tampons, douches nor sexual intercourse for at least four weeks. Follow up appointment in four weeks to assess cervical healing and discuss the pathologist's report.
