Wichita Whole Woman Center

Procedure Description:
Looking at the uterine cervix with a microscope, usually because of an abnormal Pap test

What To Expect:
Dr. Page will place a warm speculum in your vagina, and cleanse the cervix with a vinegar and water solution. Then a special magnifier with a bright light is used to examine the uterine cervix. If an area requires biopsy, it will be done at the same time as the colposcopic exam.

Preprocedure:
You may want to take 2 extra-strength Tylenol or 3 ibuprofen (200 mg., for example, Advil or Nuprin) 30 minutes before your appointment.

Postprocedure:
There is no pain with a colposcopic exam by itself. If biopsies are performed, you may have 15 to 20 minutes of cramping, similar to menstrual cramps. Over-the-counter pain relievers are usually sufficient. Also, Dr. Page may apply an iron-containing solution to your biopsy sites, to stop any minor bleeding. This will permanently stain your underwear, so you may need a pantyliner or pad for 7 to 10 days. You may not use tampons, douches, or have sexual intercourse for one week, while the biopsy site(s) heal. You will receive a letter with your test results, and/or be given a follow up appointment to discuss further care options.
